Yachting is Now Not Only for Rock Stars and Rich People
A luxury cruise on a yacht used to be only accessible a select few, including rock stars, movie stars, Russian oligarchs, and other people who are rich and famous, and can afford it. This costly hobby has long been the envy of laypeople who could only dream of gliding across the ocean in the lap of luxury. Even (and especially) yacht owners know that it’s an expensive pastime and have long joked that BOAT stands for ‘Bring Out Another Thousand’. Not everyone who yearns for a lavish lifestyle on the world’s oceans can afford the associated costs or commit to the long-term maintenance involved with owning a yacht. Until now.
Sailing experiences to suit all pockets
Even though many travellers may think that boat trips are beyond their budgets, they are probably wrong. It is now possible to rent a yacht at an affordable price through a range of online yacht renting portals, much like Airbnb – which incidentally has also started offering accommodation on the water, in addition to its already diverse options including luxury campers, converted buses, tree houses and even castles. With Airbnb, anybody can get in touch with their inner pirate and sail the seven seas without breaking the bank! Yachts are available to rent from just over US$100 a night. Why not split the bill between a few friends and have a rip-roaring celebrity-style party on the water? And Airbnb is not the only option when it comes to finding out why the upper echelons so love their yachts. There are other online portals geared to get you sailing with a variety of options, including Boatbound, Cruzin and Yachtico.
Boatbound – Going since 2013, this San Francisco-based company has over 13 million boat owners on their database! They have boats available in most main cities in the United States and cater to all budgets. An example of an affordable option is a jet engine boat, located in Phoenix, Arizona, that can comfortably accommodate up to 10 people for under US$250 a day. For those who want to splurge, you can rent a 38-foot power boat in Cape Cod for around US$2,500 a day.

Cruzin – With a massive selection of boats ranging from paddleboards to luxurious yachts, Cruzin is another United States-based boating rental company. One of the most affordable options is a Catalina Capri sailboat situated in Sausalito, California. For a mere US$169, the boat can hold as many as five passengers for a fun-filled day on the water.
Yachtico – Sailing enthusiasts interested in exploring the waters of Europe, Asia and beyond can call on this Berlin-based company to make their dreams come true. With a fleet that includes options from houseboats to luxurious yachts, Yachtico makes it possible for their clients to experience locations like Turkey, Spain, Thailand and the Caribbean. A motor yacht traversing the waters of French Polynesia could cost as little as US$385 for an entire week!
