Cuba is Never Boring
Cuba is a spellbinding destination with a lot to offer those looking for an active sailing getaway. Steady winds, an excellent climate, friendly people and stunning natural beauty makes it perfect for sailing, while African and Amerindian roots and a rich cultural background makes it ideal for exploring. Several islets are spread across coral reefs around Cuba, ready to be discovered by the adventure-hungry sailor. There is only one restricted area located around the infamous ‘Bay of Pigs’ where a failed military invasion took place in the early sixties. Yachting enthusiasts should not let this put them off. As long as they observe the rules, Cuba makes for superb sailing.
Off the beaten path
Sailors are advised that Cuba is not a typical tourist destination and that political red tape can still be an issue for visitors, especially US citizens. It is crucial to have all the correct documentation and permits in order before entering Cuban waters. Also, while the marinas are reasonably well equipped it is prudent to bring along some basic spare parts like fuel filters. Once you arrive and settle into a marina, you can safely start seeing the sights and taking in the uniqueness that is Cuba.
Cuban cuisine, culture and cigars
Because imports are restricted, products from the 50s are still abundantly in use, including cars. This gives Cuba a behind the times atmosphere and makes it any photographer’s dream. Besides being overwhelmed by the retro surroundings, your senses will be tantalized with Cuba’s smells permeating the air – from the smell of the sea and the food vendors’ tasty offerings to the fragrance of cigar smoke and the rich aroma of Cuban coffee on the humid breeze – Cuba smells alive. Food is dirt cheap and delicious. Famous for cigars, Cuba does not disappoint. Any cigar enthusiast will be thrilled to explore some of the Cuban basements where you are bound to find an old master cigar maker or two in action. Latin music and dancing is part of everyday life and visitors can be assured of a vibrant nightlife.
