The premiere of Courageous was aired on the 17th of June 2017 on NBC Sports Films. Courageous is a one-hour documentary that recounts the challenging feat of media pioneer Ted Turner’s brave attempt to win the America’s Cup in 1977. The special show was appropriately aired immediately after the NBC’s coverage of the very first race of the 2017 Finals of the America’s Cup.
Building an Empire
Turner became set on winning the America’s Cup while he was suspended from running the Braves and while he was also tackling the challenges of cable television in its infancy. The media mogul spent over a decade building his iconic sports and media empire that eventually included the Goodwill Games, Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Braves, TBS and CNN.
Bravery on the Open Seas
Known as a maverick in the sailing world, Ted Turner named the boat he planned to win the America’s Cup with ‘Courage’, which is the exact quality he needed as he tirelessly pursued the cup with a four-year old boat and a sailing team consisting of second-grade crew members. The unconventional sportsman put his reputation on the line when he set his sights on the cup, and he didn’t look back until he was victorious. With ample footage of interviews held with Turner in the 1970s his dynamic character is brilliantly brought to light throughout the documentary.
A Story Well Worth Telling
According to Mark Levy, Senior VP at NBC Sports Group, Turner’s approach was out of the ordinary on the screen and on the water, and his triumph in 1977 was one of the most remarkable and unusual chapters in the history of sport. Levy said that not only dedicated sailing enthusiasts and those who admire Turner’s legacy will appreciate the documentary – anybody who enjoys a unique story will enjoy it.
